Birth Center and midwifery model on an International level
Amnesty International recommends birth centers as part of the solution to the crisis in maternity care
- USA is one of the riches country in the world, yet everyday 2 to 3 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. A timely report from Amnesty International "Deadly Delivery: Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA" finds that the USA spends more than any other country on health care, and more on maternal health than any other type of hospital care. Despite this, women in the USA have a higher risk of dying of pregnancy-related complications than those in 40 other countries. Amnesty International recommends, ‘We must call our Representatives and tell them that midwives and birth centers are part of the solution, improved access to midwifery care and freestanding birth centers as part of the solution to this crisis”.
- 1n 1974, Maternity care association introduced the birth center option, which offers home birth style with the added advantage of staffing protocols, and equipment.
- Birth centers are primary vehicles of midwifery model of care and they arose primarily out of women’s desire of wanting more personalized individual care.
- Birth centre studies uniformly report outcomes equivalent or superior to those of comparable women giving birth in hospital.
- Furthermore if any hospital lacks 24 hour blood banking, in-house anesthiologist, pediatrician and many do- it offers no greater safety of margin in an emergency than in an out of hospital birth.
- Today there are over 140 birth centers in the U.S.
